ENDnote: Carl Rodgers advance a theory that in order for people to discover the reasons behind their personal struggles and then take steps to grow, a therapist should show them unconditional positive regard (UPR). He said: “This means to value the person, irrespective of the differential values which one might place on his specific behaviors.” With this in mind a therapist and Professor of Nursing, one Prof. Michael Doyle, advanced the idea that humanity should and could regard 'the environment' with UPR.

That perspective on 'the environment' and its resources is by-and-large in stark contrast to the ways the Western World, and colonisers in general, have regarded to the cultural landscapes they have occupied and have colonised. Arguably as consequence the so called 'developed world's' cultural landscapes have been diminished and are diminishing – and largely that is a continuing scenario.

UPR has become a foundational idea in the humanist theory. Likewise, UPR arguably should be a fundamental theory informing cultural landscaping in a 21st C. The colonising cultures of the world might profit from looking to FIRSTnation cultural sensibilities to do with the 'ownership' of place – property indeed. In Australia, the Aboriginal peoples' understandings of 'country' is an exemplar. Click here to read more to do with rankism and UPR.
